Joe Hisaishi

The composer of most of Studio Ghibli's music, Joe Hisaishi has worked with animator Hayao Miyazaki for almost 30 years. Hisaishi's music draws elements from Baroque counterpoint, jazz, and modal music, creating the unique sound world associated with Hisaishi and with Studio Ghibli itself. Studio Ghibli music was known from the outset for its eclectic, synth sound, before evolving to more motif-based and melody-driven music. In particular, Hisaishi's writing uses leitmotif, rather than a singular character being linked with one song; the motif itself is the theme of each film.
