The collaboration between the Bach Archive Leipzig and the publishing house Breitkopf & Härtel has resulted in a newly conceived edition of the BWV, which takes into account the latest findings of Bach research as well as the changed knowledge and usage structures of the 21st century. The aim was to produce a comprehensive and up-to-date reference work on Bach's works that would appeal to both the interested layman and the expert.
The first Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis (BWV) was published under the editorship of Wolfgang Schmieder in the Bach Jubilee year of 1950. 40 years later, a revised edition of this now internationally recognized reference work was published, followed by a 'small version' with further updates in 1998.
