Britten The Rape of Lucretia (Vocal Score)
Opera in Two Acts.
Ronald Duncan based his libretto in English on André Obey's play Le Viol de Lucrèce.
Britten's chamber opera (a term the composer used for one of his works for the first time here) was originally written for Kathleen Ferrier, who performed the title role in the premiere at Glyndebourne in 1946.
It tells the tragic story of the virtuous Lucretia, who is assaulted by the arrogant Prince Tarquinius in 500 BC Rome while her husband Collatinus is away.
