Up until now the trumpet has not played a hugely significant role in Krzysztof Penderecki’s oeuvre. Alongside cadences for Joseph Haydn’s concerto in E flat major, he has assigned substantial solos to the bass trumpet in his 7th and 8th symphonies in which the instrument represents the voice of God. However, it took twenty concertos for other instruments before Penderecki finally created one for solo trumpet with his Concertino.
