The writing of études for string instruments with an added second solo part is a well-established practice and constitutes a very valuable educational aid. In the second flute part for the études in Book 1 of Ernesto Köhler’s flute method presented in this edition, the composer Werner Richter has created many new playful elements and has not simply provided a mechanical semiquaver accompaniment. Richter’s composition succeeds in clarifying the functional relationships in Köhler’s music and making enjoyable performance possible through some surprising ideas. Playing together with the second part demands great concentration and discipline and at the same time trains reactivity, rewarding the conscientious student with a gratifying sense of achievement after a successful performance.
