The work opens with a jubilant, dancing rhythm on the saxophone and a "tictac"-like slap. This is immediately followed by a second dancing and very lilting theme at bar 18. These two ideas are further developed, contrasted and even superimposed by bar 118. The continuous variation of these elements - like baroque doubles - draws the listener into a variety of moods, where time sometimes seems to struggle with the movement of the dance.
