Grāmata čellam consists of two very contrasting parts. The first, very violent part "Fortissimo" (Allegro, free sonata form) deals with rough, aggressive music material in uninterrupted emotional high tension, which finally reaches a tragic, desperate climax. The second part "Pianissimo" (two parts) begins very freely, like improvising, and turns into an "Andante cantabile" with a wide-ranging melody over an organ point. With a recap of the previous musical events, the movement closes very quietly with a reminder of its beginning.
