The piano trio in B major is one of Johannes Brahms' youth works. It was created in 1853/54. The first edition was published by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig at the end of 1854. Many years later, Brahms subjected the work to a fundamental revision, significantly reducing the scope of the first, second and fourth movements and reporting to Clara Schumann that he had rewritten the work. The first edition of the second version was published by N. Simrock in Berlin in 1891. In the complete edition of Johannes Brahms: Complete Works, ed. from the 'Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde' Vienna, both versions were published with equal priority in the volume Piano Trios.
