“It’s war! O Angels of God, protect us” for mixed chorus a cappella Text by Matthias Claudius (1984) The crying out from the depths of despair in this anti-war poem from the period around 1800 is still meaningful today and unfortunately still relevant in our time. The sparing use of musical devices makes its message all the more acute and profoundly moving for today’s audiences.
