This arrangement of the well-known song cycle by Berlioz was commissioned by a Dutch ensemble in 2008. The arranger Henk de Vlieger made it his business to give expression to the intimate character of the six songs. Here the oboe d'amore, cor anglais and bass clarinet give each song its own distinctive colour. The result, however, was so convincing that de Vlieger wondered 'why Berlioz himself had not considered such an instrumentation'.
