Pēteris Vasks composed the original version for violin and piano in 1985. The year 2012 saw the publication of the "Little summer music" in an arrangement for viola and piano. The six-movement suite tells the sorrowful history of the Latvian people whose soul and love of nature are captured by the melancholy and folk-like character of the music. This new arrangement for flute and piano has been existing since 2018. The piano part is identical in all versions.
