Earlier than Chopin, Irish composer John Field is considered as the original creator of Romantic piano nocturnes. No. 9 of his 18 Nocturnes was arranged under the title Melancolie by Emil Kross, who edited and arranged numerous pieces for Schott. It is an atmospheric Song Without Words. Edition based on plate no. 02243, first published in 1894 as plate no. 25609.
