In numerous single movements and cycles for various settings, Silvestrov has, since 2003, repeatedly ‘captured’ ‘moments’ in music: fleeting thoughts, emotions, melodies, memories… ‘I do not write new music. My music is an echo, a response or a resonance to something that already exists.’ The listener is immersed in familiar sounds that recall earlier eras – Chopin, Schubert or Rachmaninoff… Interwoven with Silvestrov’s distinctive ‘sound’, which gives the familiar a slightly alienating, subtle spicy touch, the movements flow by – meditatively, almost timelessly – in this work inspired by the story of Scheherazade, whose creativity keeps her alive.
