Paolo e Virginia was written during March 1877 while Ponchielli was in Rome rehearsing his opera La Gioconda, and the ending is somewhat reminiscent of “The Dance of the Hours" (the ballet from La Gioconda for which Ponchielli is most famously known). Like other works by Ponchielli, it is characterised by a combination of operatic melodies and virtuoso technique in the instrumental parts.
