Among the one or two of remaining works by J. F. Schreivogel, a violinist active in Milan in the first half of the 18th century, is this great three-movement sonata for violin and continuo. Composed late in his career, it characterises the Italian chivalrous style at its most inventive, in terms of both music and technique. Some moments are reminiscent of Vivaldi, others Tartini, and the piece still retains individuality, particularly with its intricate harmony and rhythm.

This volume is on the ABRSM Bowed Strings Syllabus 2020-2023 and is one of the alternative pieces on the syllabus.
