The St. John Passion, Bach's first oratorio Passion, is difficult to regard as 'one' work. The Passion was performed at least four times under his direction in the churches of Leipzig between 1724 and 1750, and was repeatedly revised for this purpose, sometimes fundamentally.
This volume contains the St. John Passion in its second version from 1725, from which only excerpts appeared in our edition BA5037 (NBA II/4 1973). Along with the last version of 1749, it is one of the two versions of the Passion that have survived largely in their entirety.
The latest source discoveries - in particular a libretto print of the Passion rediscovered in 2015 - are taken into account in the edition for the first time.
