Mendelssohn's String Quartet op. 80 is one of his few "autobiographical" works, a moving musical document of his grief over the death of his sister Fanny and his attempt to process the pain of this loss artistically. Ignaz Moscheles writes about this in his diary: "The passionate character of the whole thing seems to me to be in harmony with his deeply shaken state of mind...". The only relevant source, Mendelssohn's autograph, contains numerous corrections, deletions and insertions. Some special readings in the copy probably go back to the setup for the premiere and are recorded in footnotes.
