The Pearl was commissioned for the 140th anniversary of the Coloma Convent Girls' School, Croydon.

The text of this piece is a poem by George Herbert based on Matthew xiii, reflecting on knowledge and faith.

A member of the choir has said of the piece:

".........it is an honour and a privilege to sing a song written especially for my school, which captures the spirit and atmosphere of Coloma in such a delicate way. The song makes us reflect on the importance of education whilst remembering that God is the catalyst for our learning. It sums up our school motto, To work is to pray."
