Johanna Senfter’s Three Songs for alto and eight instruments op. 72 were composed by this student of Reger during the middle phase of her career. These settings of texts by Friedrich Hebbel and Emanuel Geibel combine late-Romantic expressiveness with a rare instrumentation for alto, flute, clarinet, two bassoons, timpani, viola, cello, and double bass. The unusual instrumentation makes this ten-minute composition a fascinating, one-of-a-kind piece in the vocal repertoire.
