The Latvian region Zemgale is infamous for atrocities committed in the 13th century and in 1949. It has become a symbol for the deportation of Latvians. Vasks uses the text in a linear as well as in a vertical pattern and the musical form is a worthy reflection of the highly dramatic content of the poem.
